(Ganjam Kewda Rooh (Geographical Indication), Orissa, India ) (Kewda Industry in Ganjam ) ‘Kewda’ or screw pine (Pandanus fascicularis Lam.), is locally known as ‘Kia.’ It is an economically important species due to its male inflorescence, which are valued for the fragrant tender white spathes covering the flowers. Its derived perfumery products include Kewda attar, Kewda water and Kewda oil (rooh Kewda). The Ganjam district of Orissa supplies about 85-90% of the country’s kewda essence. Kewda grows in the 45 km x 15 km coastal belt along the Bay of Bengal. Kewda brings nearly 30-40 crores (1 crore=10,000,000) of additional income to its people.
